INTERFERENCE ANALYSIS

iQ·clear® allows the user to perform four basic types of interference analysis as defined below.

iQ·clear: Cell Information Dialog
Cell Information Dialog

The PCS to Microwave Analysis refers to proposed cell(s) that might cause interference into existing microwave link(s). The amount of interference may prohibit a PCS provider from constructing a site with the selected parameters at the proposed location. After the engineer performs the analysis, iQ·clear presents the PCS cells with color-coded graphics indicating the percentage of available spectrum in that cell.

iQ·clear calculates the interference objective (i.e. maximum allowable interference level) for both analog and digital microwave radios.

For analog radios, iQ·clear calculates both the carrier-to-interference (C/I) and threshold degradation interference objectives. The controlling or worst case interference objective is used. The C/I objective typically controls when the PCS system operates at or near the centre frequency of the microwave receiver.

For digital radios, the interference objective is determined using the manufacturer's threshold-to-interference (T/I) curves. These curves are defined to show the amount of interference that would degrade a digital microwave receiver's bit error rate (BER) from 10 -6 to 10 -5.

The Spectrum Recommendation Analysis is used to find the most likely channels that will meet a user's requirements for a PCS system. The major criterion for determining the "best channels" is relocation of the fewest number links while yielding the desired number of channels.

The Collocation Analysis is used to predict potential interference from microwave sites that are located near a planned PCS system. It identifies all microwave links, within + or - 50 MHz of the allocated spectrum, that fall within the cell radius of the proposed system and their associated interference levels relative to the interfering objective.

The Microwave to PCS Analysis provides the ability to analyze interference from the microwave incumbents into the proposed PCS system. This permits the user to examine interference levels for individual cells.

USER-DEFINED INTERFERENCE PARAMETERS

iQ·clear allows a user to select an allocation plan and a particular PCS frequency block (A, B, C, D, E & F) in the selected plan to be used in an analysis.

iQ·clear will accept frequency plans constructed using any of three technologies:

  • IS136 (30 kHz TDMA)
  • PCS1900 (200 kHz TDMA)
  • IS95 (1.25 MHz CDMA)

PCS Parameters

The allocation plan and blocks are based on FCC guidelines. The user defines the PCS parameters to be used for a project including:

  • Transmitter Power
  • Antenna Height for both Base Station and Mobile
  • EIRP
  • Number of Mobiles Per Frequency
  • Digital Modular Reduction
  • Base and Mobile Receiver Sensitivity
  • Maximum Antenna Gain (for omnidirectional antennas)
  • Mobile Distribution Method
  • PCS Antennas (directional antennas)
  • Antenna Downtilt

IQ-Clear: Interference Criteria Parameters
Interference Criteria Parameters

Once these parameters have been defined, the user specifies interference criteria parameters. You may select from among the following options, based on your specific design requirements.

  • Threshold Degradation (6 dB / 10 dB)
  • Link Reliability (99.999% / 99.9999% / None)
  • Polarization (Co-Pol / Cross-Pol)
  • Analysis Extension (10 MHz or 20 MHz)
  • Coordination Distance Factor
  • Propagation Model (TR1411 / FSL / Extended Hata / OH Loss)
  • Maximum Number of Profile Points (OH Loss only).

Finally, with iQ·clear, you can set C/I parameters to be used for all microwave sites in the project, including:

  • Noise Objective (pW)
  • Interferor Instability (%)
  • Emphasis Type (choose between Emphasis and No Emphasis)

PCS CELL LAYOUTS

iQ·clear generates a PCS cell layout in three ways:

  • Uniform Cell Layout (based on fixed radii)
  • Traffic Based Layout (derived from demographics information)
  • PCS Cell Import

MICROWAVE LINK DISPLAY

iQ·clear provides a graphical display of microwave links within a calculated (FCC-mandated) coordination distance. You can manipulate the links in the analysis by filtering by link type, spectrum selected, link owner and others. You can also edit link sites for radio and antenna configurations using the iQ·clear radio and antenna databases.

IQ-Clear: Edit Links Status
Edit Links Status

You can select and edit microwave link status based on their major characteristics.

  • Spectrum Selected (if any)
  • Public Safety Links
  • Owner
  • Analog
  • Digital
  • Video
  • Frequency Range
  • Victim
  • Path Status
  • User File

To examine a particular market's microwave links in further detail, use iQ·clear's capability to filter microwave links on the above referenced criteria for analysis and display purposes.

COMPREHENSIVE 1.9 GHZ DATABASE

Information

Comsearch maintains a dedicated staff of database engineers who constantly monitor FCC activity and update the 1.9 GHz database. Comsearch uses Prior Coordination Notices, FCC applications and licenses, and direct contact with microwave licensees to maintain the accuracy of our database. We typically discover many pending changes, additions, or deletions long before the FCC applications are filed.

For display and plotting purposes, USGS 3-second terrain, market boundary, roadway, railroads, census tract and waterway information are available in a layered fashion.

COMPREHENSIVE REPORTING

After you complete the interference analyses, use iQ·clear to create a variety of reports to analyze almost every imaginable component of the microwave or PCS system under consideration. Certain standard reports are provided with the design tool.

  • Active Microwave Link Data Report
  • Inactive Microwave Link Data Report
  • Active Microwave Link Owners Report
  • Cell Traffic Usage Report
  • System Summary Report
  • Link Severity Summary Report (Owner Based or Id Based)
  • Individual Link Severity Report
  • Spectrum Availability Report
  • Spectrum Recommendation Report
  • Collocation Report
  • MW to Mobile Interference Report
