Allen Telecom's Comsearch Division Announces
Major Agreement with FOX Digital

Providing Engineering Services For Migration From Analog To Digital Transmission

BEACHWOOD, OHIO April 10, 2000 - Allen Telecom's (ALN: NYSE) Comsearch division announced today that it has entered into a significant agreement with FOX Digital to provide engineering consulting services to ensure the integrity of their television signals during the industry-wide migration from analog to digital transmission.

The changeover from analog video to digital compressed video provides broadcast viewers with a much sharper television picture than is currently possible with analog modulation. A major technological advantage of the changeover is a more efficient use of the available satellite spectrum for broadcasters. One challenge of the changeover is that the reception of the digital signal from satellites requires a much cleaner frequency interference environment.

Broadcasters who will be using sites that have traditionally received analog video realize that these sites have been engineered and frequency protected in accordance with interference criteria for analog reception only. In order to ensure quality digital reception at each site, accurate on-site RFI measurements will have to be conducted to identify not only potential terrestrial microwave interference sources, but also potential interference from such systems as cellular, PCS, pagers, UHF transmitters, military and FAA RADARs, and aircraft RADAR altimeters. If interference levels are identified, mitigation techniques will be employed to overcome them.

"FOX Digital is leading the industry by proactively addressing the issues involved in this changeover," said Chris Hardy, Vice President of Engineering Services at Comsearch.

"We have been working with FOX Digital to accurately measure every earth station in their affiliate markets as the first step in making sure that there is no interference. We will continue to work with them to verify our on-site measurements using our comprehensive knowledge base, manage the FCC licensing process, and to ensure the interference-free environment of each earth station once the migration to digital has been completed."

Said Paul F. Beeman, FOX Digital Vice President of Broadband and Satellite Transmission: "Comsearch has been selected to conduct site visits and radio frequency interference measurements at FOX affiliated TV stations so that FOX can file for frequency protection with the FCC for each site. Comsearch has been a key vendor to FOX for many years in providing frequency coordination and FCC license filing related to C-Band earth stations."
